| The European Ombudsman Institute The European Ombudman Institute is an association under
Austrian law, domiciled in Innsbruck, Tyrol. The association was founded in 1988; its
proposers had been meeting at Innsbruck University since 1983 within the framework of a
non-institutionalised union under the name "European Ombudsman Academy", where
they had also been staging theme-related events.
The European Ombudsman Institute is a non-profit
making, scientific association; its purpose is to adopt a scientific approach in
addressing issues relating to human rights, civil protection an the institution of
ombudsman; to conduct research in those areas; to promote and disseminate the ombudman
concept; to support Austrian and foreign ombudsman structures from a scientific viewpoint;
and to co-operate with institutions advocating similar objective.
Today virtually all European ombudsmen are
members of the association, together with professors and other private individuals with a
keen interest in the subject matter.
Any natural or legal person involved with issues
relating to the ombudsman concept and who agrees with the objectives of the association
may become an ordinary member of the association of the European Ombudsman Institute.
Extraordinary members are such persons who trough
their interests are in a position to and are able to promote the association, or any
persons dealing with issues of the European ombudsman system outside Europe.
The Committee decides on admission to membership.
Following the resolution
of the general assembly held on May 24, 2002, the (annual) membership
fee is EUR 350,-- for institutions and EUR 60,-- for natural persons.
